Thursday, October 14, 6 - 8:30 PMSTEAMBOT is a collaborative exhibition, featuring artwork that combines both current and Industrial Age technologies. Through a juried process, five artists, programmers, and fabricators were selected to create an exhibition that collapses time between the cutting edge of today and the craftsmanship and ingenuity of the past. Steambot bridges the worlds of art, technology, industry and history, through the spirit of interdisciplinary exploration.
Using the historic Peter Kirk Building as a starting point, the artists have developed partnerships, researched histories, shared resources, and combined skills in pursuit of a technological optimism, much like the early days of Kirkland. Soon after ground was broken for the Peter Kirk Building (current home of KAC) in 1888, dreams of building a "Pittsburgh of the West" were thwarted by a global economic collapse in 1893. Despite similar challenges today, Seattle's Eastside is home to a highly innovative, creative, and tech-oriented community. As innovation often occurs in social and collaborative environments, Steambot was conceived to provide enhanced opportunities for cross-pollination and knowledge sharing. Five skill sets became one, suggesting that Cummins, Gallagher, Oliver, Moss, and Winder are STEAMBOT.
