Tips sought in cold case murder of young man
Detectives are desperate for new leads in the cold-case killing of a young man inside his apartment.
In September 2006, John Schuloler was found dead in his first-floor apartment, lying in bed. An investigation determined the 23 year old was killed by blunt-force trauma to the head.
There were no signs of forced entry, but detectives now believe it was a burglary gone wrong, and that Schuloler might have briefly fought with the intruder.
"It has all the twists and turns of a mystery novel," said Schuloler's mother, Lani Faye. "I mean, it's turning out to be more complicated than I ever would have guessed."
At least one notable item was stolen: an army-green, REI backpack that Schuloler always carried. Police say it could be an important clue -- even after all these years.
"For it to be gone is not normal for him," said Faye.
Faye never thought it would take this long to find the person who killed her son. But it's been nearly three and a half years since her son was murdered, and the case has not yet been solved.
"He's my only child. He's the only child I have, and he's taken from me," said Faye.
Family and friends say Schuloler was very popular, maybe even a little too social. People often came and went from his apartment, which makes it difficult for investigators to figure out who had access.
Kirkland Police say they have persons of interest in the case, but no suspect.
"I believe the person has no ability for remorse," said Faye.
Schuloler's case is one of the very few active cold cases in Kirkland. Anyone with information on the case is urged to contact police immediately on the tip line at 425-587-3515.
